About The Show

Written by Lydia Diamond
Directed by Marcus Denard Johnson

This winner of the Black Theatre Alliance Award for Best Play chronicles a weekend in the life of an affluent African American family. The tensions ride high as the Levay brothers bring their respective fiancées home to meet the parents. Family secrets, childhood demons and romantic entanglements are revealed, leading to collisions over race, class, and privilege. Gender roles and generational dynamics further ignite this explosive tragic comedy.

“A MUST SEE. Fascinating. Arrestingly fresh.” - The Wall Street Journal

“She’s a polished playwright, creating a cast-full of dynamic characters all sitting uncomfortably on a powder-keg situation.” - The Boston Globe

“A juicy family drama.” - Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

Special Event

Wednesday, Jan 4 - IllumiNation at Stick Fly

Join us for a post-show discussion moderated by Stick Fly Director Marcus Denard Johnson and Visiting Assistant Professor DeAnna S Wright.

Family dynamics are colored in with an abundance of history. In this particular world of an affluent family, the Levays, we get to bear witness to the unfolding of their history in the midst of the family's patriarch, his two sons, their two visitors and the daughter of the family maid. In this talkback, we will engage in a conversation that unpacks the universal narrative of Stick Fly, comprised of race, class, privilege, status and the turbulence that comes when family secrets are uncovered.
