Apprenticeships are full-time opportunities for early-career and emerging artists and arts administrators to gain experience in a professional, non-profit theatre setting.

2023-2024 Apprenticeship Opportunities

Stage Management Apprenticeships

Stage Management Apprentices are an integral part of the stage management team in pre-production, rehearsal, and performance throughout Asolo Rep's season. SM Apprentices work closely with AEA Stage Managers and actors, union stagehands, and nationally recognized directors and designers. Several apprenticeship tracks involve working on multiple productions in a rotating repertory environment.

 

Duties may include:

  • Prepping for start of rehearsals with the AEA SM & ASM.
  • Tracking props, costumes, and entrances/exits.
  • Taking and distributing line notes.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of an organized, clean, and inclusive rehearsal room.
  • Assisting the the creation and upkeep of the run sheet.
  • Involvement in the choreographing of transitions and communication with the AEA ASM and IATSE crew.
  • Helping to manage backstage throughout tech and performance.

 

Applicants should have:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of the production process
  • The ability and desire to work closely on a team of SMs
  • Interest in pursuing stage management professionally.
  • Professional experience at a regional or summer stock theatre is encouraged, and with union crews is a plus.

Stipend: $525 per week.

  • Shared company housing inclusive of private bedroom, internet and basic utilities within 6 miles of the theatre is available to rent for $200 per week.

Apprentice Schedule:  While hours will vary from week to week., an average of 50 hrs/week is anticipated for this training position.

 

Average length of typical Stage Management Apprenticeship: 10-40 weeks

 

How many tracks are being offered?  We are seeking up to 8 Stage Management Apprentices for the 2023-2024 season, which runs late August 2023 through June 2024. Apprenticeship tracks vary in length based on show assignments; please indicate your availability in your cover letter.

Company Management Apprenticeship

The Company Management Apprentice is a key member of the Artistic Administration team under the primary supervision of the Company Manager. Over the course of a full season, this position offers thorough exposure to the various company management and administrative operations of a major regional theatre with a primary focus on artist hospitality.

 

Duties may include:

  • Coordinating travel and housing accommodations for Asolo Rep artists and staff
  • Safely transporting artists in company vehicles
  • Ongoing upkeep of company housing and rentals
  • Sharing weekly “on-call” responsibilities with the Company Management team
  • Working with the Company Management team to carry out various physical tasks, such as moving furniture, carrying suitcases, or unloading items into company vehicles
  • Compiling & editing artistic copy for marketing materials
  • Providing administrative support for the Board of Directors
  • Completing cross-departmental administrative tasks

 

Applicants should have:

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • The desire to complete administrative tasks with a high level of detail
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace programs
  • The ability to remain calm and flexible during potentially stressful situations
  • An interest in the day-to-day operations of a large regional theatre

Dramaturgy and Casting Apprenticeship

Applications will be accepted through 12pm on Monday, August 14, 2023.

 

The Dramaturgy and Casting Apprentice works closely with the Dramaturg & Literary Associate as well as the Associate Artistic Director in charge of casting on a broad range of projects and initiatives in the Artistic Department.

 

Duties may include:

  • Evaluating and reporting on script submissions 
  • Conducting dramaturgical research for the ’23-’24 season 
  • Attending rehearsals and preview performances. 
  • Participating in creating audience-facing dramaturgical features and displays.
  • Leading talkbacks, pre-show informative presentations, and other audience engagement events 
  • Providing administrative support for public programming including maintaining the literary office’s script archive 
  • Providing administrative support for local and national casting efforts 
  • Supporting the artistic needs and development processes of the Ground Floor Series, Asolo Rep’s new works program. 

Additional opportunities may include:

  • Taking on the role of lead dramaturg on one Rep production. 
  • Being a credited writer on program features.
  • Representing Asolo Rep at events throughout the community

Applicants should have:

  • A strong knowledge of contemporary, classical, and emerging playwrights
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Attention to detail 
  • An enthusiasm for engaging audiences and public speaking 
  • A commitment to pursuing a career in an Artistic capacity, including Literary Management, Production Dramaturgy, or Casting.

A Bachelor’s Degree or higher with a concentration in dramaturgy, theatre education, or similar applicable experience is highly recommended.

Step 1: To apply for the Career Development Program, please submit materials to : apprenticeship@asolo.org.

Please note: Candidates may apply for more than one CDP Apprenticeship.

Step 2: Members of the Asolo Rep Career Development Team  look at submitted materials and will choose candidates to interview.

Emails will be sent out to candidates who are not chosen to be interviewed.


Step 3: Initial conversations will be scheduled with candidates. These conversations are with the immediate potential supervisor and another member of the Career Development Team.

Some positions may require further materials to be turned in, like a portfolio or writing sample. Candidates will be notified of this when contacted about their interview.
References will be checked after this conversation for candidates that are moving forward in the process.
Emails will be sent to candidates who are not moving forward in the process.

Step 4: If needed, Zoom conversation with candidates will be scheduled with immediate potential supervisor, department team member(s), and a member of the Career Development Team.

Step 5: Offers will be sent out.
