Posted: July 27 / 2022

(SARASOTA, FLA) — The Board of Directors of Asolo Repertory Theatre has elected Randell Johnson, Ph.D., as President for a one-year term that began on July 1. He succeeds Carole Crosby, who served for two terms.

“We are delighted to have Randell Johnson taking leadership of the Board at this pivotal time,” said Asolo Rep Managing Director Linda DiGabriele. “His professional consulting experience and deep commitment to the organization will position him for a successful presidency.”

A native Tennessean, Dr. Johnson has been a resident of Sarasota since 2004. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Tennessee Technological University and a second Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Emory University. For 30 years, he served in different college-level capacities, including Professor of Psychology and English, Chair of Arts and Sciences, and Executive Director for Student Services. As a consultant, Dr. Johnson used his qualifications in psychological assessments and profiling to help organizations with reorganization and management development, as well as coaching them toward improved communication, planning and marketing.

In 2004, he accepted the position of Vice President for Administration at Platinum Seminars in Atlanta, where his focus was on luxury travel. In 2007, he and his husband, Bobby Jensen, started Randell’s Travel, Inc.

Johnson and Jensen are longtime Asolo Rep supporters and were instrumental in helping form OUT@AsoloRep, Sarasota’s premiere cultural event connecting local LGBTQIA+ communities with fantastic theatre. They have supported Asolo Rep’s partnership with Florida State University since 2006 and recently sponsored the third-year class at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.

In 2019, Johnson and Jensen were inducted into Asolo Rep’s Crystal Society, and in 2021, they pledged a gift to the Staging Our Future Capital Campaign, which is now recognized with the naming of the Dr. Randell Johnson and Bobby Jensen Education Hallway at the Robert and Beverly Koski Center.

Johnson was elected to the Asolo Rep Board in 2021 and has served on the Executive, Conservatory Support, Finance and Strategic Planning committees.
