Introducing Asolo Rep Young Artist: Online Classes, designed for ages 8-18. From demystifying Shakespeare to exploring innovative ways of creating theatre together, these classes will spark your young artist’s imagination and help to hone their theatrical technique. See below to find out more about the exciting content and amazing professional artists who will be leading these classes.

Create with Courage: Acting Meets Improv
Designed for Ages 11-13
Dates: June 1-5
Time: 10:00am
Cost: $50/student
Want to stretch your creative brain while honing your acting craft? During this dynamic five-day online intensive, Asolo Rep Artist, Helen Joo Lee (Murder on the Orient Express, The Great Leap) leads participants through the exciting ways that improvisation and traditional acting connect, combine, and compliment one another. Whether an experienced performer or trying something new, this class is for you!

MEET OUR SESSION 1 TEACHING ARTISTS: HELEN JOO LEE

HELEN made her Asolo Rep debut this season as Mary Debenham in Murder on the Orient Express and Connie in The Great Leap. She performed on the famed The Second City stages in Chicago as a permanent replacement in Fantastic Super Great Nation Numero Uno (e.t.c. Stage / 41st revue) and understudied in Dream Freaks Fall From Space (Main Stage / 106th revue). She is also a proud member of the all-Asian improv group Stir Friday Night. Television and film credits include Chicago Med, Empire, The Chi, Later Days, Teacher, and Canal Street. Before she was a performer, Helen graduated cum laude with a degree in Art History and Education from UCLA and spent a decade in the classroom as a 3rd grade and ESL teacher here in the States and in Melbourne, Seoul, and Rome. She can be seen currently in a national commercial for Lowe's.
Create with Courage: Awakening Shakespeare
Designed for Ages 13-18
Dates: June 8-12
Time: 4:00pm
Cost: $65/student
Demystify, detangle, and delight in this five-day online Shakespeare intensive. Asolo Rep Artist, Tina Stafford (Murder on the Orient Express, Into the Breeches) leads participants through story exploration, character creation, and an innovative creative process, culminating in an “on (y)our feet” virtual performance. No matter your experience level, this collaboration will spark your imagination and awaken you to new ways of bringing classic language to life!

MEET SESSION 1 TEACHING ARTIST: TINA STAFFORD

TINA is thrilled to collaborate with this daring company, bringing relevance, and challenging audiences to think outside of the box. She spent two years on the road with the first national tour of the Broadway musical Once. Leading roles around the country: York Theatre, 59E59, Soho Rep, Prospect Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Buck’s County Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Goodspeed Musicals, Cleveland Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, Cape Playhouse, Westport Country Playhouse, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Arena Stage, Geva Theatre Center, Kansas City Rep, the Utah, Texas and Maine Shakespeare Festivals, among many others. Proud AEA member.
SESSION 2:
This set of classes includes opportunities for Young Artists to explore different and exciting ways of creating theatre.
Create with Courage: Design Learning Lab
Designed for Ages 13-18
Dates: Thursdays, June 18-July 23
Time: 12:00pm
Cost: $75/student
Explore the world of theatrical design from your own living room. In this unique experience, young artists participate in a self-guided creative process, where they will use text and provided design challenges to explore elements of theatrical design with the support of Asolo Rep Artists. If you are interested in learning more about the many methods of theatrical storytelling this class is for you!
Students will be using platforms such as: Google Classroom, See-Saw, and Zoom.
Create with Courage: Digital Devising
Designed for Ages 11-13
Dates: Tuesdays, June 16-July 21
Time: 1:00pm
Cost: $75/student
Create with us! Join Asolo Rep Education & Engagement Specialist (and Devising-Nerd) Tiana Turner, as she explores non-traditional theatre creation techniques--fostering connection and collaboration in a digital world. Participants will work together to create their own unique piece of theatre, using movement, storytelling, and digital tools. This fun and creative class is designed to challenge the imagination and spark inspiration.
Students will be using platforms such as: Google Classroom, Flipgrid, and Zoom.
