Musical Script Study

With spring in full swing, Asolo Rep is sprucing up our play reading class with a Musical TWIST! Join fellow artists far and wide as we dive deep into scripts ranging from beloved classics to groundbreaking new musicals. During our exploration, participants will explore aspects of storytelling in musical form. From script to music and lyrics, we’ll journey through how all these elements not only combine together but support each other to create something greater than their individual parts. This remarkable course will be led by familiar faces, Asolo Rep Dramaturg and Literary Manager, James Monoghan and Helen Hayes Award-nominated, composer, music director and professor, Dr. John Cornelius. Come together for this dynamic, interactive discussion and see Broadway shows with new eyes!

Meet the Teaching Artist: James Monaghan (Musical Script Study)

ENGAGE-OnAir_carousel_James.jpgJames Monaghan is incredibly happy to call Asolo Rep his new artistic home. Prior to joining Asolo Rep, he wrote about theatrical design as the Tow Foundation Fellow in the Roundabout Theatre Company Archives, created a one-on-one theatrical experience entitled [antidote] for the National Theatre of Croatia in Rijeka, served as the dramaturg for Leaving Eden, which won Best Musical at the 2019 New York Musical Festival, and worked in the literary department of the Play Company, an Off-Broadway production company focused on international work. Prior to completing his MFA in dramaturgy at Columbia University, James worked as an educator and director in his hometown of Houston, Texas. BFA, New York University. James has been the Dramaturg and Literary Manager for Asolo Rep since 2019.


Meet the Teaching Artist: Dr. John L. Cornelius, II (Musical Script Study) 

YA Dr. John Cornelius Feb 22.pngJohn L. Cornelius, II is a member of ASCAP and the American Federation of Musicians (AFofM) and his output includes a number of chamber works, orchestral works, and song cycles. He has also written, along with his collaborator, Michael J. Bobbitt, several works for the lyric theater including Garfield: The Musical with Cattitude, Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds (Nomination - Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play - Helen Hayes Awards 2014), Mirandy and Brother Wind, Say It Ain’t So!, The Yellow Rose of Texas, and The Bingo Long Travelling All-Stars and Motor Kings, Both Garfield and Three Little Birds are licensed through R&H Theatricals and Mirandy through New Plays for Young Audiences. His most recent concert works include Chansons Creoles, a song cycle whose text is by gens de colour of 19th-century Louisiana, Three Creole Songs commissioned by the Kingwood Chorale, Song of Houston and The Kashmere Cycle, song cycles commissioned by Houston Grand Opera’s HGOCo., and Fulfilled, a Passion Week Cantata. His new chamber opera, What Wings They Were, a commission from HGOCo, premiered in May 2016. His most recent works include a set of Cowboy Songs and Sweet Freedom’s Song: a Fantasia on the hymn-tune America. Dr. Cornelius is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and is a Professor of Music at Prairie View A&M University.

In these intimate, two-hour long online masterclass sessions, participants learn from and connect with the professional theatre artists facilitating each class. Artist will introduce and coach participants through new, challenging, and fun performance skills and theatre magic.

Online Class Cancellation and Withdrawal Policy


Asolo Rep reserves the right to alter or cancel programs as necessary. If a program is cancelled by Asolo Rep, participants will receive a tuition refund in full. 


    • All withdrawal requests must be sent in writing to education@asolorep.org 
    • If a participant withdraws from a class before the second day of class, the registration cost is refunded, less a $25 administrative fee.
    • Due to the resource scheduling and commitments required to provide the programs, no refunds are given after the second day of class.
