Sarasota is a beautiful city on the Gulf of Mexico about 50 miles south of Tampa/St. Petersburg and 75 miles north of Fort Myers. Known as the cultural center of Florida, Sarasota is home to dozens of performing arts venues, a renowned opera, theatre and ballet companies, numerous art museums, a thriving visual arts community and numerous art festivals. Its rich arts scene rivals some of the biggest urban centers in the country.
Sarasota’s artistic atmosphere has generated a host of local festivals. Film is represented by the Sarasota Film Festival in April and the Sarasota Film Society Cine-World Festival in November. Music is represented by the Sarasota Music Festival which brings the best up-and-coming young musicians to Sarasota for three weeks each June and the Sarasota Blues Fest in September. Ringling Museum in conjunction with the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York hosts The Ringling International Arts Festival, which brings together performers from across the globe for a week-long celebration of art in all its forms in October.
Much of Sarasota County's recreation is found in, on, or around the Gulf of Mexico or Sarasota Bay. Sarasota County boasts 35 miles of coastline which includes 13 public beaches.
